Nine New Disney Films for 2019
Disney enjoyed banner years at the box office in 2017 and 2018. Can the company continue its winning streak into this new year? Let’s just say the odds look pretty good. Today’s quick post lists nine new Disney films for 2019.
Well, actually it’s ten now, since Disney announced in early March (and after I originally published this post) that it was pulling one of its titles forward from May 2020 to October of this year.
Ten is a nice round number, right? So much for my clever headline.
March
Spring rolls in like a lion and out like an… elephant?
Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson, opens on March 8. Tickets are already on sale for the newest Marvel adventure.
A few weeks later a live-action Dumbo flies into theaters. The new film, directed by Tim Burton and “loosely based” on the 1941 original opens March 29.
April
Disney’s potentially (unquestionably?) largest film of the year, Avengers: Endgame, opens April 26. Avengers: Infinity War grossed over $2 BILLION worldwide last year, so expectations for the anticipated sequel are sky high.
May
Another live-action remake with slightly less positive buzz at the moment is Aladdin, starring Will Smith, set for May 24.
Notice a pattern here? Super hero… live action… super hero… live action…
June
Let’s mix it up the pattern a bit with a sequel, another popular type of film in the Disney line-up for 2019.
Disney Pixar is set to release Toy Story 4 on June 21. Tom Hanks reportedly teared up while recording his final scene as Woody, so be prepared for some classic Pixar emotion. You can check out the latest trailer here.
July
Speaking of being prepared (you know, Scar’s song?), Disney’s live action remake of The Lion King opens on July 19. The new film is directed by Jon Favreau and returns James Earl Jones to his original role as Mufasa (HOORAY!). Favreau also directed the recent remake of The Jungle Book, and the seasonally popular Elf, but The Jungle Book is probably more relevant here. The trailer looks the most promising of the three remakes to me.
August
Whew! Something new and different! Well, kinda. Artemis Fowl, directed by Kenneth Branagh and based on the popular book opens on August 9.
October
Now we’re combining film types with a live-action sequel! Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil opens on October 18. This is the film that Disney announced in early March that took the film count from 9 to 10 and messed up my original headline.
Not that I’m complaining. Wouldn’t want Maleficent on my bad side.
November
Closing out 2019, Disney is preparing a major one-two-PUNCH!
Frozen 2 hits theaters on November 22, about six years after the first Frozen completely shattered expectations. Could the sequel possibly live up to the first film? Well, Disney released the first Frozen 2 trailer on February 13 of this year and less than a month later it already had 35 MILLION views.
So, yeah, it’s looking pretty promising. You can check out the trailer here. It’s also running as a preview with Captain Marvel in theaters (naturally).
December
And then the final blow, or bow (maybe?) is Star Wars IX on December 20. J.J. Abrams, who directed Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens, returns for this ninth film in the popular Star Wars series.
It will also follow the openings of the highly anticipated Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland (May 31) and Disney World (August 29).
Pretty good year to be a Stars Wars fan. (Major, major understatement).
Conclusion
Pretty awesome year to be a Disney fan too. Ten new films to look forward to from March to December.
What do you think of the line-up? More of the same or take-all-of-my-money-now?
Something to ponder as you wait for your popcorn.
Add a little (movie) magic to your world!
Awesome Post!!!! So entertaining! ❤️❤️❤️
