Five Things to Love About Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside
Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside is a beautiful oasis tucked into a well-manicured corner of the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. Identified as a “moderate” in the Disney hierarchy of resorts, its southern charm and attractive list of amenities make it a popular choice among guests. There are numerous reasons why, but I’m going to limit my list to five. Here are five (of many) things to love about Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside.
(1) Variety of room styles
Riverside offers three different room styles. The first, located within the Alligator Bayou section of the resort, is the most casual of the bunch. These buildings were original to the property when it first opened as Dixie Landing in 1992 and offer the closest proximity to the resort’s gift shop, lounge and restaurants. Of course the rooms have been updated numerous times since then, including a soft goods refresh (new flooring, bedding, drapes, etc.) that is currently under way this year (2019). Each room in Alligator Bayou also features a unique flip-down child-sized bed to accommodate parties of five.
The Magnolia Bend section of the resort offers two additional room styles within stately, white-columned buildings. The first resembles a southern style hotel with curved mahogany headboards, teal green accents and riverboat details. Most of these rooms offer two queen beds, but some offer king-sized beds too.
Speaking of royalty, the third room style is fit for a princess. The Royal Guest Rooms feature a more vibrant color palette, Disney princess details and elaborate headboards with integrated fireworks! They cost a bit more than the other two styles and are located the furthest away from the resort’s main building, but they are still a treat for those that choose to stay there.
With so many different types of room styles, Port Orleans Riverside offers guests the chance to stay at the same resort multiple times, while still experiencing something new.
(2) Theming
Another thing to love about Port Orleans Riverside is the well-executed theming. The Louisiana-inspired styling of the resort blends sprawling estate, adventurous bayou and refined steamboat travel into a welcoming package. The southern details are everywhere, from the moving paddles on the ceiling in the grand lobby to the giant water wheel outside. Even the music and messaging on the buses heading home from the parks fits the southern style theme.
The grounds fit the theme too with manicured walkways, mature trees and stately fountains. It’s a massive resort, but a surprisingly quiet one. You can even take a horse-drawn carriage ride along the paved trails if you want to fully immerse yourself in the theme.
(3) Boat to Disney Springs
Speaking of transportation, another great feature of Port Orleans Riverside is the complimentary boat service to Disney Springs. I feel like the value of this particular benefit has increased dramatically since the recent expansion of Disney Springs. It’s super easy to catch a boat on the dock near the lobby and enjoy a relaxing ride to dinner, shopping or endless entertainment options. The ride itself is also entertaining, offering views of the Sassagoula River and the Tree Top resort buildings of Saratoga Springs. Just make sure you pay attention to where the boat docks for your return trip!
If you want to spend more time exploring by boat, Port Orleans Riverside also offers guided fishing tours or pirate-themed adventures for younger guests. Unlike the boat to Disney Springs though, these adventures require an additional fee.
(4) Pools!
There are no additional fees to enjoy the fabulous pools though. Port Orleans Riverside features six (yes SIX) pools! The most elaborate one is on Ol’ Man Isle located in the center of the resort. It features a water slide, a winding layout with splash fountains and easy access to Muddy Rivers, a bar offering a variety of drinks and light meals. There are also numerous poolside activities such as Disney trivia, dance parties and splash contests. Most of the lounge chairs offer shade throughout the day and the gated area also includes a separate kiddie pool and hot tub.
If the activity at the main pool is too busy for you, you can also choose to relax at any of the five additional pools throughout the property. These so-called “quiet” pools are usually less crowded and located closer to your room.
If that’s still not enough, guests of Riverside also have access to the main pool at Port Orleans French Quarter, which is a short walk or boat ride away. This pool features another slide, a kids’ splash area and significantly less shade, if sunbathing is on your priority list.
(5) Ye Haa Bob
The fifth thing to love about Port Orleans Riverside is Ye Haa Bob at the River Roost Lounge. Multiple nights a week Ye Haa Bob Jackson delights guests at Riverside with his fun family-friendly musical performances. I’ve watched numerous shows here and always forget to take pictures because I’m too busy clapping, laughing or trying desperately to sing along. He really is a charmer and a unique feature to Port Orleans Riverside that can add some extra magic to your trip. It’s a great way to end the day, or extend it, if your younger guests require you to leave the parks early.
And that’s it. Five things to love about Port Orleans Riverside. I could have easily listed more, like the new dog-friendly policy, the tasty beignets nearby at French Quarter or… you get the idea. Overall, the great blend of amenities and value at Port Orleans Riverside make it a popular resort choice for Disney guests.
Well, at least until Caribbean Beach gets gondola access to Star Wars Land!
